US Pledges Collaboration with Senate President to Enhance Cambodia-US Relations

Phnom Penh, June 4, 2024 - US Secretary of Defense Lloyd James Austin III affirmed the United States' commitment to collaborate with Senate President Hun SEn and the Royal Government of Cambodia to bolster relations between the two nations. This assurance came during a pivotal meeting between Secretary Lloyd and Senate President Hun Sen at the Senate Palace in Phnom Penh earlier today.

"Despite the challenges we may face, there is ample room for constructive dialogue and cooperation to enhance our bilateral ties," stated Secretary Lloyd James Austin.

Senate President Hun Sen echoed the sentiments of Secretary Austin, acknowledging the historical deficits in mutual trust and information exchange that have hindered the relationship between the two countries. He emphasized the need for open communication and proactive collaboration to overcome past misunderstandings.

Expressing concern, Hun Sen urged the United States to refrain from entangling Cambodia in geopolitical rivalries and underscored the importance of maintaining Cambodia's sovereignty and independence.

"We urge our American counterparts to respect Cambodia's sovereignty and refrain from turning our nation into a battleground for geopolitical contests," emphasized Senate President Hun Sen.

Reaffirming Cambodia's commitment to a law-based approach, Hun Sen extended gratitude to the United States for its assistance across various sectors. He stressed the necessity of overcoming existing barriers and fostering more effective cooperation to propel bilateral relations forward.

As Cambodia and the United States embark on this path of collaborative diplomacy, the commitment to constructive engagement and mutual respect signals a promising trajectory for their future relations.
